Characterized by overly aggressive behavior, BMS is often seen during breeding season when males display heightened levels of territoriality. Male hoofstock can become violent toward humans, animals and other males of their species, and their behavior may even include charging and running.

To avoid BMS, owners should take proper precautions when introducing and managing adult males, especially when breeding season arrives. Any human interaction with hoofstock, particularly adult males, should be done with at least two handlers. They should have extensive knowledge of animal behavior, the signs of aggression and how to diffuse aggressive behavior. We also recommend that owners become familiar with any physical or psychological signs of BMS to take necessary actions when the signs are present.
