PET ONLY OR FOR BREEDING PURPOSES?
*
Are you looking for a lemur as a pet or for breeding purposes? It is illegal to breed and sell exotic animals without a USDA license.
Pet only - I will never breed this animal and agree to sign a no-breeding contract.
Breeding
1. Is it legal to own non-human primates, specifically lemurs, in your area? If we find out that lemurs are illegal where you live, we will not deliver or release them to you, and you will forfeit all deposits and payments. *

4. Do you have a preference in sex?
Male
Female
No Preference
5. Ring-tailed lemurs only: Your hand-raised lemur baby WILL become territorial and aggressive around 2 years of age, even after spaying/neutering? Over 9 out of 10 hand-raised ring-tailed lemurs have attacked someone, and oftentimes even their owners. Are you aware of this, are you ok with getting bitten, and are you ok with a pet that your family members and guests will not be able to handle once they turn?
6. Lemurs do best with same-species companions. The 2nd best situation is raising lemurs of different species together. Will the lemur you are wanting to adopt have another lemur friend?
7. Lemurs live up to 20 years in the wild, but can potentially live up to 30 years in captivity. Are you ready for a 30-year commitment to this lemur?
8. Have you ever cared for an exotic animal? Please list your prior experience.
9. What is your living situation? How many other people live with you, and what are their ages?
10. Please describe any other pets in the house. Most lemurs will grow up to bond with your pets, as long as your pet is not a danger to the lemur, and vice versa.
11. What do you plan on feeding your baby lemur after he/she is weaned? Be specific with brands of commercial feed, proportions of fruits and vegetables in the diet, any snacks you plan to give, etc.
12. What type of housing and neighborhood do you live in? Apartment or house? Yard? Ranch? etc.
13. What enclosure will you have for your baby lemur? When he/she is grown, what enclosure or room will you dedicate to to the lemur? Be specific about type of enclosure or room, with size dimensions and bar/wire spacing. Also describe the cage accessories and enrichment you will provide in their enclosure(s).
Please email photos to dragonstoneranch@gmail.com
14. Will you be able to stay at home for the majority of the day the first week of the bonding process? After the initial bonding period, how many hours will you be home to spend time with you lemur on a daily basis?
15. Will you have help caring for him/her?
16. Do you travel often? If so, do you have someone in mind that can take care of the lemur? The lemur will need to become familiar with the potential babysitter early on. It will be difficult for someone to watch your mature lemur if your lemur does not consider them a part of his/her troop.
17. Are you prepared to wake up in the middle of the night to feed your new baby for the first one or two weeks?
Even a baby that no longer requires milk feedings may still cry throughout the first few nights.
Yes
No
18. Are you prepared to handle an exotic animal that may sometimes bite and scratch?
With consistent proper training, you may be able to stop or at least reduce biting. However, lemurs are not a domesticated species, and they can still attack when you least expect it.
Yes
No
19. Are you prepared to train an exotic animal, knowing that it may take 10x, 20x, or even 100x more tries to teach a command than it would a domestic dog?
20. What will happen to your lemur if you cannot get them to stop biting and you have already exhausted all training attempts? What will happen to your lemur if you decide you no longer can or want to take care of him/her?
21. To reduce aggression that may arise when the animal reaches sexual maturity, you will want to neuter/spay when he is old enough (around 6 months). Do you plan on spaying or neutering your lemur?
23. While rabies vaccines may protect your lemur from other rabid animals, please know that there is not a vaccine approved for lemurs. This means that if your lemur bites anyone, the animal control authorities may take your lemur away and potentially euthanize them. Do you understand?
24. Do you agree to contact Dragonstone Ranch first when any issues or concerns arise regarding your lemur, or if you ever decide to rehome your lemur?
25. Just to reiterate the rehoming policy: Should you one day decide that the lemur is no longer a good fit in your home, do you agree to return the animal to Dragonstone Ranch?
26. Do you plan on picking up your pet at Dragonstone Ranch in Gatesville, TX, or will you be requiring pet transport? If someone else other than the person listed on this application will be picking up, please provide details.
We can deliver baby lemurs to your door ONLY WITHIN THE STATE OF TEXAS via a third-party USDA licensed pet transporter. The shipping fee is typically $200-$400. Please note that Dragonstone Ranch does not guarantee the health or condition of any animal after it leaves our care.
27. How did you hear about us?
28. Do you have any further questions about lemurs, their care, or our policies?
